In my opinion Excel Reports and SQL Reports are two of the most under utilized tools in Dynamics GP. If you haven’t deployed these items in your environment now would be an excellent time to think about doing so. The big bonus is that these tools are super easy to deploy and they are included for free with Dynamics all the way back to Dynamics GP version 9 I believe. Before we get started deploying I am going to make a couple of assumptions.
- You have admin access to your GP installation.
- You have an existing SQL Reporting Services environment established.
- You have publishing rights on your SQL Reporting server.
The first thing we will deploy are the Excel reports. When you deploy Excel reports one of the first things you will need to know is where on your network you are going to deploy them to. Normally you might have an Accounting folder on your network so the path would look something like \\file-server\Accounting\GPExcelReports or something similar. In my example I created a folder on the c:\ drive of my laptop.
With the folder selection process out of the way lets get logged into GP and to the Reporting Tools Setup window.
Dynamics GP > Tools > Setup > System > Reporting Tools Setup
You should then see a window like the one below. You will notice that I have already entered my reporting path. In the bottom of this window you will see a listing of of companies for your GP environment. Place a check in the box for each company you would like to deploy reports for and click on Deploy Reports.
The above screen shot shows what the deployment window looks like during the deployment process. If you had chose to also deploy the SQL Reports both dialog boxes would be displaying a progress bar. In my instance I’m keeping it simple and deploying one option at a time.
Once the process is complete you are brought back to a window that looks like the one below. If you notice in the bottom of the window under the company selections a green checkbox next to Excel Reports. This means the reports have been deployed.
Now browse out to the your folder an open your fresh new source of information.
In the next post we will pickup with completing the deployment of the SQL Reports. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them and I’d be glad to happy to help you out if I can!
